The transition from preschool or kindergarten to Elementary School (Grade 1 onwards) is a major milestone for both parents and children. Preparation isn’t just about reading readiness; it’s about building foundational skills that ensure a smooth and confident start.
1. Academic Prep: Focus on Fundamentals
While formal academics will be taught in school, reinforce early childhood readiness skills at home. This includes recognizing and writing their name, holding a pencil correctly, identifying simple shapes and colours, and knowing the alphabet and basic numbers. Simple, fun activities like counting steps or reading together daily are most effective.
2. Emotional Support: Fostering Independence
The biggest shift is often the social and emotional one. Encourage emotional support by practising small separations and emphasizing that school is a safe, exciting place to meet friends and learn new things. Teach them how to express their needs clearly and to listen to their teachers. Independence is key: practice opening lunchboxes, zipping up jackets, and using the bathroom without assistance.
3. Routine and Structure
Start a consistent bedtime and morning routine well before the first day of school. Predictable structure reduces anxiety. Practise the new routine, including the travel time and packing a school bag, to make the first day feel familiar rather than overwhelming.
A child who is academically prepared and emotionally secure is set up for success from day one.
